Olivier Cuendet, conductor
After having studied the organ and conducting in Switzerland, Olivier Cuendet moved to Italy and the USA in order to improve his art with masters such as Igor Markevitch, Franco Ferrara, Seiji Ozawa, Rafael Kubelik and Leonard Bernstein.
After winning a prize at the N. Malko in 1983 in Copenhagen, he went on to conduct throughout Europe. From 1992 up to 1995 he was the artistic director and main conductor of the "Västeras Sinfonietta" Orchestra in Sweden, as well as of the Caen Orchestra in France from 1995 up to 1998. He worked in collaboration with several soloists such as Maria-Joao Pirčs, James Bowmann, Thomas Zehetmaier or Uri Caine.
From 1998 up to 2001, Olivier Cuendet was manager of the Conservatory of Lausanne and operated with success the transition to the HEM (Hautes Ecoles de Musique = Music High Schools). Within this position, he created the "Atelier Lyrique de Lausanne" (= Lausanne Lyric Studio), intended for the training of opera singers. At present, he is in charge of the coordination of the singing department at the Geneva Conservatory.
His concert repertoire widens from baroque to contemporary music, including classical and romantic periods as well as classical of the 20th century. He conducted numerous world premier pieces of composers such as Gyorgy Kurtág, Franco Donatoni, Olga Neuwirth, Pascal Dusapin or Heinz Holliger. He also composed several works for ensemble.
In 1980, he started his career in the opera at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice (Italy), where he conducted a production of Giselle with Rudolph Nureyev. Subsequently, he set up many ballets and operas, from Monteverdi to contemporary composers in France, Sweden, Spain, South Africa and in Switzerland
During the season 2004/2005, Olivier Cuendet has the opportunity of making his debut in South America and is making several tours in Europe and in Russia. Furthermore, he is conducting various productions of Verdi operas in Russia and in South Africa.
